A Guide to Nonsurgical Skin Tightening

Skin laxity caused by excessive weight loss, aging, genetics or childbirth makes many people self-conscious about wearing trendy or revealing clothes. Too much loose skin may cause back pain and make it harder to exercise. Recent innovations in non-invasive procedures make it easier to firm loose body and facial skin without surgery.

Losing weight is good for your health and your appearance, but individuals with extreme weight loss find loose skin on the abdomen, arms and other areas still make it difficult to dress the way they want. Obese people who lose lots of weight may develop rashes or yeast infections in skin folds if the loose skin isn't removed by non-invasive or surgical methods.

Your skin may regain elasticity after weight loss if you've been overweight a short time. If you lose a lot of weight after being obese for many years, it's more likely you'll have extensive loose skin.

Why Skin Becomes Stretchy and Loose

Aging skin loses collagen and elastin, proteins found in connective tissues under surface skin, causing the epidermis, the top, visible layer of skin to sag and stretch. That's why your skin naturally looks fuller and plumper when you're young - collagen and elastin production are in full force then.

When you lose a lot of weight quickly, you'll lose muscle mass as well as fat tissue, and this creates larger areas of sagging skin. People who lose a lot of weight slowly won't experience the same amount of loose skin as people who lose weight rapidly.

Discuss Your Treatment with Us

Once you've decided nonsurgical treatment is right for you, set up a consultation with a practitioner specializing in aesthetic medicine. Only trained, certified individuals working in a medical office or medi-spa are qualified to perform non-invasive skin tightening. The practitioner will ask you about previous surgeries, your medical condition and what medications you take. Based on the answers to your questions, the practitioner will recommend the best course of treatment

Loose, saggy skin anywhere on your body, from the neck and jowls to abdomen and buttocks, can be tightened with non-invasive treatments performed on an outpatient basis. Technological advances in aesthetic procedures make it easier than ever for people with a mild to moderate amount of sagging skin to receive treatment.

Do You Need It?

Good candidates exhibit the following problems:

  • Loose skin on the neck, cheeks, abdomen or arms
  • Poor quality skin texture and tone
  • Skin laxity or stretch marks caused by childbirth or an operation
  • Unwillingness to commit to liposuction or invasive surgery

FDA-Approved Non-Invasive Treatments

There's no magic, over-the-counter cream or supplement that will firm up your skin or make sagging skin disappear. Only non-invasive or surgical methods performed by a medical practitioner can significantly tighten or eliminate loosen skin. Surgical lifts, tummy tucks and liposuction are reserved only for the most severe cases and require a hospital stay and weeks of recovery.

Many people with mild to moderate amounts of loose skin can benefit from nonsurgical skin tightening. Non-invasive treatment takes place in a doctor's office or medical aesthetic clinic or spa, and there's little to no downtime associated with these procedures. Some of the treatments suitable for tightening skin on the face and body include radio frequency (RF), ultrasound and intense pulsed light (IPL). Each session lasts an average of 30 minutes, although some may take as long as 60 or 90 minutes. The length of each session depends on the amount of loose skin and the area(s) needing treatment. There are few side effects with non-invasive treatments, and you'll be able to return to work or other activities right after the treatment session.

You'll see an improvement in firmness and tone immediately, but full results may not be evident for a few weeks or months. It all depends on the original condition of your skin and the treatment method you've chosen. These non-invasive, in-office treatments produce firm, natural-looking skin. Up to 8 treatment sessions may be needed to see optimal results. After the first set of treatments, you may occasionally need follow-up sessions to maintain tight skin in the affected area.

After you've received non-invasive skin tightening, it's important to maintain your skin by eating right and exercising. Including more protein in your diet and incorporating strength training into workout lessens the chance of lax skin returning (or appearing in the first place.) Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is another way to maintain tight skin.
